Let's Grow Up Ladies

I hate to admit it, but I think that my generation has a bit of a "Peter Pan" complex. We seem to be very attached to our youth. Many of us still listen to ninety's music. A good percentage of us are still living the party life. However, the biggest thing that we seem to hang on to well into our thirties, is our twenty-something sense of style.

I know that turning thirty can be a tough transition. You do not have to forget every fashion statement you made in your twenties. Nonetheless, as you get older your style should mature. Many of us have taken care of ourselves, so we do look a little younger then we are. Perhaps this is why some women think that low-rise jeans and midriff-baring t-shirts are acceptable at our age. Thirty-year-old fashion has a few more rules than than you are probably used to. However, these rule can help you look your best at any age.

Rule #1-Know Your Body There is no such thing as the perfect body. So whatever your shape is right now, dress it the best you can. Learn to accentuate the body parts you like, and camouflage the one's you wish to hide. Also remember that while trends are fun, they are not necessary to be stylish. Only wear clothing that is right for your body-type.

Rule #2-Wear the Proper Underwear Under garments can make or break an outfit. You should always invest in a good bra. Whether you are on the bustier side, or if you could use a little more, a quality bra can make all the difference. You will look slimmer, curvier; and you will learn to love your "God-given" assets. Most specialty and department stores have specialist that will help you find the correct bra size. Lastly, underwear are not made to be shown. So make sure that you under garments are appropriate for your attire.

Rule #3-Cover Up Wearing skimpy clothing gives the impression that you may be attention seeking. It will usually draw the wrong type of attention. In fact, over-exposure can make you look less attractive. Showing small amounts of skin is sexy, yet age appropriate. Show a little arm, shoulder, or back. Subtlety shows maturity and class.

Rule #4-Find the Right Fit Always choose garments that fit ans flatter your shape. This is one concept that many women do not get. Clothes that are ill fitting can make you look shorter, heavier, and less put together. If you feel that you are lacking knowledge in this area, watch some of the fashion oriented television shows like TLC's, What Not to Wear , and The Style Network's, How do I Look? These shows explain how to dress different body types.

Rule #5-Use Color and Patterns Correctly Understand which color palettes are right for you. You should also know which colors to stay away from. This may take some experimentation. While in the dressing room at a store, I like to hold a garment close to my face, and just see how it looks. I look to see if it makes my eyes stand out, or are they less noticeable. I also check if the color makes my skin glow, or does it wash me out, This method seem to work for me. Also use color and patterns to show your personality.

Rule #6-Wear the Right Accessories and Shoes Accessories and shoes are popular with every age group. As you approach your thirties, accessories should get less "cutesy" and more "artsy." Also, be careful not to over-accessorize. Choose shoes that are tasteful, and less "chunky." Huge sneakers and clogs look young. Use shoes to either compliment a look, or to be the center of attention.

Rule #7-Change Your Hair and Make-up Your haircut and color should work with your facial features and body-type. Everyone should go to a hair stylist once in their life, and allow them to do whatever they want. I know that it sounds scary, but your hair can always be changed if you do not like it. Do your research and find a stylist that you trust. Your make-up should be more subtle, yet functional. Fashion magazines, like Allure and Glamor , have great make-up tips and tricks.

Growing older does not have to be a negative experience. This is an age where should start to understand who you are. Your style should represent that. Embrace the fact that you are older and wiser. Follow these simple rules, and you will look better than ever.

Hi

I am 43 and feel that there are no positive style role models for my age group. The problem is everything is aimed at younger women in their twenties.

Older women should value their age and experience and revel in being able to dress like a woman at last. I am hopeful though as there seems to be a real trend for dressing in a more mature and glamorous way with a real interest in 1950's vintage styles on the red carpet.

Demographically, there are also more older women than younger now so retailiers will have to start taking notice.

Hi FindMyTeenfashion, I have to agree with rontlog above. As we get older we're vearing away from all the fashionable blahblahblah! I mean, I'll buy certain things to accessorize but no more than that. A cute scarf or a shoe or boot. I love vintage jewelry and of course diamonds. This is a good write and I enjoyed it. Look forward to reading more as Ive become a fan. Feel free to visit my page as well. I'm sure you may find something entertaining. :) Good luck and many blessings to you.
